The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg is inviting high school students in Central Pennsylvania to join the annual Martin Luther King Jr. International Poetry and Storytelling Festival on January 19. This year’s theme is “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Joyce Davis, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council, encourages students to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideals and their relevance to their lives today.

“We must accept finite disappointment, meaning that disappointment is temporary. But infinite hope remains. We can never lose hope that the world will get better. It will, as long as we don’t give up or give in to despair,” Davis explained.

On February 15 at 5:30 p.m., the 3rd Annual Central Pennsylvania Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Banquet will take place at the Hershey Lodge. Dr. Wanda Knight, Professor of Art Education and African American Studies at Penn State Harrisburg, said the banquet, held on Dr. King’s birthday, aims to foster community engagement.

“I want to emphasize that Dr. King’s birthday is always on January 15. This year, January 15 falls on a Wednesday. The banquet’s goal is to bring together local organizations, businesses, and residents, strengthening community ties and promoting unity. It aligns with Dr. King’s vision for a just and equitable society,” Knight said.
