Local poets Cindy Hunter Morgan and Anita Skeen will kick off the Lansing Poetry Club’s Copper Chimney Lounge Poetry Series at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, at University United Methodist Church in East Lansing.
Hunter Morgan, an assistant professor of creative writing at Michigan State University, is the author of two chapbooks, The Sultan, The Skater, The Bicycle Maker and Apple Season. Her 2017 collection, Harborless, was named a 2018 Michigan Notable Book and won the 2017 Moveen Prize in poetry. Her latest work, Far Company, was released in 2022.
Skeen, a professor emerita in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at MSU, is also the founding director of the college’s Center for Poetry. She has published six poetry volumes, including Each Hand a Map, Portraits, Outside the Frame, The Resurrection of the Animals, Never the Whole Story, and When We Say Shelter, co-written with poet Jane Taylor. She has also collaborated with local artist Laura DeLind on two works: The Unauthorized Audubon and Even the Least of These.
After their readings, both poets will be available to sign and sell copies of their books. An open mic session will follow, where attendees can sign up to read their own work. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged.
