San Mateo County is extending the deadline for applications for its poet laureate position until January 22. The position, which combines civic duty with creativity, is open to individuals who have lived in the county for at least three years and have published one or more poetry collections. Applicants should also be ready to engage in community service.
David Canepa, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, expressed the significance of the role: “Poets put words to our feelings and help to bring meaning to our emotions. We encourage both emerging poets with fresh ideas and established poets with unique voices to apply.”
The poet laureate is expected to contribute to the county’s literary legacy by hosting public readings, organizing programs, and participating in civic events.
Previous laureates, like Lisa Rosenberg, have diverse backgrounds. Rosenberg, who holds degrees in physics and creative writing, describes herself as a “recovering engineer.” Others have been teachers and published authors.
The poet laureate position lasts for two years and includes a $5,000 annual stipend. An additional $2,000 is available for programming over the term.
