Residents of Walsall are being encouraged to explore their creative side through free public art and poetry sessions happening across the borough until the end of January.
The initiative is part of “Art Meets Poetry Live,” a collaboration between the Walsall Society of Artists and The Walsall Poets Collective. These sessions welcome participants of all skill levels, including poets, artists, and beginners. Attendees can engage in workshops, connect with others, and exchange creative ideas.
The Walsall Society of Artists is marking its 75th anniversary this year. Earlier this month, it held its 74th annual exhibition at Walsall Art Gallery. Local artists showcased their work, conducted live demonstrations, and displayed exceptional pieces for the public to enjoy.
As part of its milestone celebrations, the Society has partnered with Creative Black Country to produce a commemorative book titled Art Meets Poetry 2025. The book features artwork from the exhibition alongside the poems they inspired. It will be available for purchase for £5 at the “Art Meets Poetry Live” event on January 26.
Upcoming Events at The New Art Gallery
Two “Art Meets Poetry Live” sessions are set to take place at The New Art Gallery in Walsall. These events, scheduled for January 19 and January 26 from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., will feature poets from The Walsall Poets Collective. Each poet will share verses inspired by the artwork on display, followed by artists explaining the ideas behind their creations.
Ahead of these sessions, two poetry workshops will be held in the gallery’s Community Gallery. Organized by The Walsall Poets Collective, the workshops are free and open to everyone without prior booking. The goal is to inspire future collaborations between art and poetry while exploring how sound can influence creative expression.
