The Carson City Senior Center will host two key events this January, featuring a poetry reading and a presentation on the city’s new emergency notification system.
Poetry Reading with Kathy Nelson and George Perreault
On Tuesday, January 21, at 12:30 p.m., poets Kathy Nelson and George Perreault will share their work in the Joshua Tree room at the Carson City Senior Center, located at 911 Beverly Drive. The event is free, and no RSVP is required.
Kathy Nelson, a 2024 Nevada Arts Council Fellow, has published two chapbooks, Cattails (Main Street Rag) and Whose Names Have Slipped Away (Finishing Line Press), as well as a full-length collection, The Ledger of Mistakes (Terrapin Books). George Perreault, who has served as a visiting writer in New Mexico, Montana, and Utah, has published five full-length collections, with lie down as you were born (2023) being his latest.
Training on Carson City’s New Emergency Notification System
On Wednesday, January 29, from 1 to 3 p.m., Jon Bakkedahl, Deputy Emergency Manager for Carson City, will lead a presentation and training on the city’s new emergency notification system, !CARSON. This session will take place in the Computer Lab at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive.
The system provides non-emergency notifications about road closures, major road construction, Red Flag Warnings, and more. Future updates will include emergency alerts such as evacuations, flood warnings, and hazardous materials alerts. Carson City residents are encouraged to attend and learn how the system can keep them informed.
