Worcestershire is inviting young poets to compete for the title of Young Poet Laureate 2025. The competition is open to those aged 10-18, who are encouraged to submit poems based on the theme of “courage.”

The winner will be announced in April. The current laureate, Iona, urged young poets to participate, calling the experience “an amazing journey.”

The poems will be judged in three age groups, from Year Six to Year 13. Finalists from each group will perform live at The Hive in Worcester, where a winner will be chosen from each group. One of these winners will be crowned Worcestershire’s Young Poet Laureate 2025.

“The competition is an amazing journey. The themes spark originality, and being part of it connects you to a wider community of poets. It feels incredible to take part,” Iona said, reflecting on her experience as last year’s winner.

Jen Loffman from Severn Arts, which is organizing the competition in partnership with the county council, emphasized that the competition offers more than just a platform for poetry. “It’s an opportunity for young people to express their thoughts and experiences,” she said.

Councillor Karen May called it “a wonderful opportunity” for young people to showcase their talents and creativity.

Applications are available on the Severn Arts website. The deadline to apply is 5:00 p.m. GMT on March 28. The final will be held on April 27 at The Hive.
