Teen poets, writers, and rappers in grades 9-12 are invited to a day of creativity and self-expression at the High School Poetry Jam on November 16. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Holland Center, located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale.
The event, open to school groups, creative writing classes, literary clubs, and solo poets from across Arizona, will feature a performance by Brandon Leake, winner of America’s Got Talent Season 15. Leake will share his spoken-word poetry and offer tips for using words and voice to express raw emotion and energy. No prior experience is necessary.
“Oftentimes, we have stories and emotions that we just need to express,” Leake said. “This is a space to share those thoughts—without judgment—on stage, if you choose, or just in your notebook.”
Leake is an award-winning spoken-word poet, artistic educator, and motivational speaker from Stockton, California. He gained national recognition for winning America’s Got Talent in 2020, becoming the competition’s first and only spoken-word poetry champion.
Jennifer Rosvall, executive director of The Holland Center, noted that poetry is recognized by health professionals as a valuable tool for emotional healing. “We are honored that Brandon will be at The Holland Center to teach poetry as an art form and help youth see it as a healthy outlet for their thoughts and emotions,” she said.
