The Warren Community College Visiting Authors Series will continue on Wednesday, November 13, with readings by novelist Kate Brandes and poet Shawn R. Jones. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in room 123A. It is free and open to the public.

Kate Brandes, a resident of Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, writes stories that explore rural life, small-town dynamics, and environmental issues. Her works often highlight strong characters tied to specific places and the effects of environmental challenges on culture and family. With over 20 years of experience as a geologist and environmental scientist, Brandes now teaches creative writing and environmental studies at Moravian University. She also co-directs the Moravian Writers’ Conference. Stone Creek is her second novel.

Shawn R. Jones, originally from Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a 2023 Civitella Ranieri Fellow. Her poetry collection, Date of Birth, won the 2022 Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize in Poetry. She has also authored two poetry chapbooks, Womb Rain (2008) and A Hole to Breathe (2015). Her work has been published in numerous journals, including Tri-Quarterly, Callaloo, and Rattle. In addition to her writing, Jones is the co-owner of Tailored Tutoring LLC and Kumbaya Academy, Inc., a dance instructor at Halliday Dance, and a member of the poetry performance troupe, No River Twice.

The Visiting Authors Series is supported by a grant from the Warren County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs. The event is ADA accessible, and sign language interpretation is available with two weeks’ notice.
