Indian poet and artist Sandeep Kumar Mishra has earned a place in the prestigious Evergreen Wishes Christmas Award Anthology 2024, published by the League of the Poets (T.L.O.P) International in Nigeria. His poem, “When You Buy Their Sorrow,” was selected alongside works by other renowned poets, including Timothy Michael DiVito, Leonidas Mertiris, and Christian Ward, among others.
This recognition adds to Mishra’s growing list of international accolades. Earlier this year, he made headlines by winning the Wells Story Prize 2024 in the UK and the Westerwood Story Prize 2024 in Scotland, solidifying his reputation as a talented and globally recognized poet.
Mishra’s poem, When You Buy Their Sorrow, explores the deeper meaning of Christmas, shifting the focus from materialism to themes of love, unity, and spiritual growth. Through vivid imagery and lyrical language, the poem captures both the festive spirit and the moral significance of the holiday season.
The poem contrasts the cold “icy winds” with the warmth of “chimney smoke,” setting a cozy Christmas scene. The mention of “colourful lights” and “holy monks” evokes a festive atmosphere, while Mishra urges readers to embrace peace and unity. He emphasizes reconciliation, urging readers to “hug the foes” and to bring together people from all walks of life, symbolized by the image of the “rich and poor at the same table.” His plea to “not let [foes] slip away” calls for forgiveness and understanding.
The poem’s title and concluding lines—“It’s Merry Christmas when you buy their sorrow”—offer a powerful message. “Buying their sorrow” suggests an act of selflessness, where one takes on the burdens of others in the spirit of love and compassion. This thought-provoking theme challenges readers to look beyond surface-level holiday celebrations.
Mishra’s literary achievements are further marked by his induction into the India Book of Records on October 2, 2024. He became the first author in the world to be nominated for more than 40 literary and art awards. His debut poetry collection, One Heart – Many Breaks, became a bestseller and has been translated into over 20 languages, extending his global reach.
In addition to his writing, Mishra is an accomplished artist. His works have been displayed in galleries across the world, including VisArts in the USA and the Holy Art Gallery in Barcelona. This year, he won the ‘Talent Award’ at the Blue Koi Art Gallery in the USA and was shortlisted for the ‘Commended Award’ in the National Photographic Society’s photo contest. Mishra has also earned Distinction and Laurel Awards at both the Gallery4 Percent Art Show in the USA and the Exhibizone Virtual Art Gallery in Canada. His artistic success showcases his ability to engage with audiences through multiple forms of creative expression.
The Evergreen Wishes Christmas Anthology 2024 highlights the values of unity, love, and joy during the Christmas season, bringing together poets from around the globe. Mishra’s inclusion not only elevates his position as a prominent contemporary poet but also underscores the growing influence of Indian literature worldwide.
