Today marks the 89th anniversary of the birth of renowned poet, playwright, and fiction writer Syed Shamsul Haq.
Born in Kurigram on December 27, 1935, Haq began writing at an early age. He later enrolled in the English department at Dhaka University, though he did not complete his degree.
His first story, titled Udayasta, was published in 1951 in the literary magazine Agatya, edited by Fazle Lohani.
Haq authored several notable poetry collections, including Ekada Ek Rajye, Biratihin Utsab, Baishakhe Rachita Pangktimala, Nabhimule Bhasmadhar, Pratidhwanigan, Ami Janmagrahan Karini, Paraner Gahin Bhitar, and Apar Purush.
He also gained recognition for his works of fiction, such as Jaleshwarir Galpagulo, Prachin Bangsher Nihswa Santan, Nishiddha Loban, Khelaram Khele Ja, Stabdhatar Anubad, Raktagolap, Tumi Sei Tarbari, Anander Mrityu, and Neel Dangshan.
Haq revolutionized contemporary Bangla drama by introducing a new style, writing plays in verse. Some of his famous plays include Payer Awaj Paoa Jay, Nuruldiner Sara Jiban, Ekhane Ekhan, Irsha, Narigan, and Banglar Mati Banglar Jal.
For his contributions to Bangla literature, Haq was honored with prestigious awards, including the Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak, and the Independence Award.
Syed Shamsul Haq passed away on September 27, 2016.
