A celebration for the release of a new U.S. Latinx poetry anthology will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing on ASU’s Tempe campus.

The Latino Poetry Anthology, edited by Rigoberto González, features the work of 180 writers. The collection spans Latinx literature and history from the 17th century to the present. According to a press release, the anthology highlights the diverse voices and experiences within the Latinx community.

Published by the Library of America, the anthology includes writers from different generations, regions, and backgrounds, all exploring “the places we call home,” the book’s subtitle. González commented, “We’re not just one thing, one story, one people. We are proud to be a part of the American fabric.”

Two contributors to the anthology will attend the event: Alberto Ríos, an Arizona-based writer and director of the Piper Center, and Gabriel Ramirez, a poet from Philadelphia. Both will read from the anthology and discuss their work. Ramirez is also a CantoMundista and this year’s Poetry Coalition Fellow working with CantoMundo, as noted in the release.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided, along with book giveaways and other items for attendees.

For those unable to attend in person, remote access to the event via Zoom will be available. Educators and others interested in attending can request the link at cantomundo web. Parking will be validated for educators or community members who carpool with four or more people to the event.
